  1. Opossum is the name for several MARSUPIAL of
  2. the family Didelphidae, native to Central and
  3. South America, with onespecies of the U.S.
  4. Mostly arboreal and nocturnal animals,
  5. Opossums havelongnoses, naked ears,
  6. prehensile tails, and black and white fur.
  7. They eat small animals, eggs, insects, and
  8. fruit. When frightened they collapse as if
  9. dead. Opossums are hunted as pests as well as
  10. for food and sport.
